League
An AGTTA league consists of 10 sessions.   In order to qualify for a post-league award a player must play at least 6 sessions in a league.  Winners of league awards are the players, within their class, with the best match win/loss ratio in their best 6 sessions.

The AGTTA League Process

The AGTTA League runs every Tuesday night. A league is a series of 10 sessions over a roughly 10 week period (may vary due to unavailability of the gym, holidays, or inter-league break). A new league starts following the completion of the previous league. League awards are based upon the outcome of the 10 week league.

You can play one league session or all, no commitment to participate beyond a single evening is required.    To be eligible for awards you must play a minimum of 6 sessions in a league however.   To play league just show up on Tuesday night before 8:15 and sign in (members pay $3.00 per session, non-members $5.00).

A session opens at 7:30 P.M. for pre-league open play. Check the web site for announcements of league cancellations, these cancellations may be full club closure or only the league may be cancelled and the club may be available for open play.

When arriving for league play sign in at the league desk and pay the $2.00 rating fee. Failure to sign in and pay the fee results in your ineligibility for league play that night. Only the first 60 players to sign in will be eligible for league play that night.

At approximately 8:20 P.M. the last call for league sign-in occurs. You must be signed in as one of the first 60 players at this time in order to participate that league session.

Once the league draw (league rating process and draw) is completed the League Manager will call the players to the league desk for their group assignments. Please cease play immediately and come to the desk at this time so that league play can begin promptly. The League Manager will make any club/league announcements and hand out the group match sheets and game balls so that play can begin.

League play follows the match order as listed on the group match sheet. If junior players are participating in the group the junior player(s) may ask to play some or all matches out of order so that he/she may go home at a reasonable time. Any player in the group may choose not to expedite his/her match with the junior player. Cooperating with a junior player's request is recommended but voluntary.

As each game completes mark the group match sheet with the score of the game and the winner.

As each match completes mark the group match sheet with the winner of the match. Check to ensure that the marked winner has three game wins recorded.

When the last match completes the winner of the match records the outcome and takes the completed group match sheet and game ball back to the league desk.

The League Manager will compile the results of the league session and publish these to the AGTTA web site at league section of the page.

With the limit of 60 players in the league there will be at least 3 tables available for open play on each night. When more than one player is waiting to play on these tables the format will be 2-on-2-off to facilitate everyone getting as much play as possible.

About AGTTA Ratings and the League Draw

  1. The league draw is based upon each player’s AGTTA rating. Every player who participates in league has a AGTTA rating. New players will be assigned an initial rating to begin play.

A player’s Rating is used to seed players into a group of three to five players with similar ratings. A player’s rating is adjusted after each league session based upon his/her performance. This is how a player advances groups, by defeating players until his/her rating qualifies him/her to be seeded into a higher group. Conversely a player will be seeded into a lower group if by losing matches his/her rating declines. The higher rated the opponent the greater the increase or decrease in the rating adjustment from that match. Note that the mix of players in any given league session will effect the group a player is seeded into.

Another factor in the AGTTA League is the automatic promotion of a group winner. Any player who wins his/her group the previous week will automatically be seeded into the next higher group the following league session. Be forewarned that this “promotion” is made without a guarantee that the player will necessarily be seeded into the higher group with players of a higher rating. Because of the variation in the mix of players attending any particular league session a group above the previous session’s group may have players with lower ratings. The League Manager may recognize this and attempt to make a best-effort adjustment if time allows. Note that a player must attend the next chronological session in order to receive this benefit, it is not carried forward to whatever session the player next chooses to attend. Also note that group winners in the last session of a league will not be seeded into a higher table at the start of the next league.

AGTTA ratings use the USATT ratings adjustment chart (see “USA Table Tennis Rating Chart” at USATT ratings process to adjust player’s ratings following each league session. A player’s rating at the beginning of a session is used to calculate adjustments for that session (ratings are not dynamically adjusted after each match). The AGTTA group match sheets display the rating adjustment in the lower lines of each match box.

In an effort to keep AGTTA & USATT ratings aligned the League Manager adjusts AGTTA ratings at the start of each 10 session league. Any player who has participated in a USATT tournament since the start of the last league and whose USATT rating is higher than their AGTTA rating will receive an adjustment of their AGTTA rating up to their USATT rating. This adjustment takes effect in the first session of the next AGTTA league. This adjustment is only made at the beginning of a new league.
